The Federal Government has directed the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to consult with the relevant stakeholders so as to come up with new and separate cut-off marks for admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education from next year.  A statement issued on Monday by the Deputy Director (Press and Public Relations), in the Ministry of Education, Ben Goong, said the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwukah, gave the directive after a one-day meeting with chief executive officers in the ministry. According to him, it is wrong to subject candidates seeking admission to different higher institutions to the same cut-off marks when the duration and contents of their courses are different. The minister also approved the decision by JAMB to reduce its cut-off marks for admission into tertiary institutions. Anwukah maintained that the current policy of adopting 180 as the uniform cut-off point for admission lacked fairness, equity and logic. Goong sai...

NIGERIAN SENATE The Upper Chambers of the National Assembly of Nigeria on Thursday passed the Nigerian Peace Corps for final reading.  The bill which seeks among other things, the establishment of the Nigerian Peace Corps as an agency under the Ministry of Interior had successfully passed through to the final reading. “The Peace Corps has been functioning already we are only providing it with a stronger frame work. We look forward to efficient functionability in view of the scarce resources that we have and help in youth unemployment” , Senate President, Bukola Saraki said.

President Muhammadu Buhari and Saraki  It has been revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday afternoon, held a closed-door meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Senate.   Premium Times reported that the senators at the meeting, held at the President’s office at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, were led by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu.   After the meeting with the lawmakers, they exited while Mr. Buhari held a personal meeting with Mr. Saraki.   Wednesday’s meeting occurred about a week after the Senate rejected Mr. Buhari’s request to borrow $29.9 billion from external sources.   The lawmakers, across party divide, rejected the application without debate saying it did not come with relevant information such as purpose, means of repayment and so on.   The debt, if approved, will be Nigeria’s largest ever borrowing.
